From the looks of this blog, we’re spending as much time with movies as with books these days. But just like with adult titles, if it’s a good teen book, someone is going to want to make a movie of it.

The first one coming up is Rick Riordan’s The Lighting Thief – renamed for the movie as Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It is coming out in the first part of February 2010.


The second one that I found out about today is the movie version of Alex Flinn’s Beastly. With the cast on this including Mary-Kate Olsen, Vanessa Hudgens and Neil Patrick Harris, it should draw in an audience beyond those who are familiar with this modern day retelling of The Beauty and The Beast story.

We have both of these titles in the media center, as well as the rest of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and Alex Flinn’s newest fairy tale inspired story A Kiss in Time.

The Lovely Bones

The latest in the book to movie trend came out this weekend – Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones. I saw the trailer when I went to see New Moon. It is gorgeous, but some of it really creeps me out.

Cirque du Freak movie

Twilight isn’t the only teen vampire book to make it to the big screen. Darren Shan’s Cirque du Freak is the next to make the jump.

Where the Wild Things Are

Whenever I go to a movie that is based upon a book, I always set myself up for disappointment.  In my opinion, the movie is never as good as the book.  Yet when I heard that Where the Wild Things Are would be “coming to a theater near me,” I have to admit that I was excited.  Maurice Sendak’s classic, Caldecott-winning book (an award that is presented based upon illustrations)  has less than twenty words, yet has been transformed into a full-feature movie by director Spike Jonze.  Whether or not it will live up to the book that lives in many of our childhoods is another question.  You’ll have to head to the theaters on October 16th to find out whether or not you approve.  Either way,  as Max declares in the book, “Let the wild rumpus start!!”


         


A new Pooh

So what did you read this summer?

Summer is a time for me to read whatever I want. Along with my usual stack of vampire novels, I found a couple others that I really enjoyed.
The Thirteenth Tale by Diana Setterfield is a wonderful Gothic tale. Aging author Vida Winter has never given a straight answer about her childhood. She claims that a good story is always more interesting than the truth. But as she is dying she decided to set the record straight. Hiring a young biographer, we learn the story of her childhood. It’s a true gothic tale with twins, orphans, a fire and plenty of twists.
The other is a title still on the bestseller list – The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. Taking place in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962, it tells the story of three women at the start of the Civil Rights movement. Great characters and distinctive voices tell a moving story. I think this is going to become a classic.

It’s a new year!

Welcome to the 2009-10 school year!
It’s a new year (in a way) and a good time to be making some resolutions. We started this blog as a way to communicate to students and teachers about the construction.  Well, after the construction was finished last spring, we pretty much ignored it.
But we’re back! There are still plenty of exciting things to talk about from the media center. Keep your eyes on this space as we start talking about books and more!

 Think you can make a poem out of anything? Think you couldn’t write one if your life depended on it? Try this challenge. Try a Poegle.

A poegle is a poem that you make from other people’s words (“poem” + “google” = “poegle”). Type a phrase, such as “before the war,” into a search engine, then copy and paste the resulting sentences that contain the phrase. Next, edit the sentences – subtract words, change tenses, rearrange the order – until you have a poem, or poegle. Anyone can make a poegle. The raw materials may come from others, but the poegle is the poegler’s own.
