So did you vote for what you thought the book was about in the previous post? (I know you didn’t from the results of the poll.)

Ok, so look down at the last post and make your vote before you read any further.

Done?

Well I can tell you what I expected. I knew it was set in the French Revolution, and that the slash of “red necklace” was a reference to the guillotine.  So I expected something about an upper-class girl from the cover.

I guess it was in a way, but that upper-class girl is more of a Cinderella character and not the protagonist of the story.  The hero of the story is a young gypsy boy who has grown up as a magician’s assistant. Our hero escapes death, is raised with foster parents in London, and returns to France during the revolution to rescue the girl, a niece to his foster parents. All the while pursued by a serial killer.

Did you expect that from the cover?

I know there are guys who would enjoy this story – it’s a very Alex Rider- like story set in a historical period. But I can’t imagine them getting past the cover.  Hopefully the paperback version will have a cover of city alleys, a guillotine and a more gender-neutral look.

judging by a cover #1

So what do you think this is about? No Googling- just make you best guess from the cover. I promise to tell you all about it next week.    -Ms. Bergin

media center update 12/2

December 2, 2008

Today the door was open to the new media center as I walked down to the office. So I grabbed my camera to take a couple shots. We were lucky enough to have them say “Come ‘on in” so we got to look around for the first time in a while. Last time we tried to look there was plastic hanging from everywhere as they did the ceiling work.

This time we were able to come in the doors from the other side, so it is a different view. This area will have enough seating for a class to work and stack shelving. That’s why the windows are up so high in the back – there will be shelving along the walls. You can see the dust on the floors where they have been smoothing them to put down the carpeting.

Open seating

Open seating

This is looking slightly to the right.  Some of this will be open seating with study carrels toward the windows in back.  Yes, there is a door there that opens to the (small) courtyard back there too. There will be more shelving along the back wall area there too.

Continuing to swing around to the right (use the floor sander as your reference point) you can see how the open seating can also be used as a class meeting space with the white board.  There will be more shelving along the back wall area there too.  And see the door (aka- black hole)? That’s where I usually photograph from, to give you the perspective.

fiction

Rotating more to the right, this area will be largely low shelving for fiction.  You can see the red wall the left and the  counter in front is the circulation desk. The doors you can see in the red wall are office/storage space. The windows to the right of the photo are windows on a classroom. It will be so nice to have a dedicated instructional space again after being nomadic for a year and a half! Directly to the center of photo is where the main entrance of the media center will be located.

Sky!

Sky!

Sky! We are so excited to have natural light, and being able to see honest and true blue is an added joy.

carpeting

carpeting

And this is why the door was open; the guys were bringing in the carpeting. The rolls look huge,  until you realize there are over a dozen of them there! It’s enough to do my whole house 6-7 times!
